What you’ll need:
- Sweet potatoes – we like to use sweet potatoes that are medium in side (about 3 inches wide). You will be able to cook about 3 medium sweet potatoes in a 6 quart Instant Pot.
- Water
- Instant Pot
- Butter and Flakey Salt – optional for serving
How to make Instant Pot Sweet Potatoes
- Wash the sweet potatoes and trim ends if needed.
- In the Instant Pot, place the trivet, water and sweet potatoes; be sure they’re not overlapping or on top of each other.
- Lock lid in place and close the vent valve.
- Manually adjust time to 30 minutes on high pressure (see graphic and notes below for sweet potato size and time options).
- Once done cooking, let natural release for 10 minutes. Flip vent valve to release any additional pressure, remove lid, and serve sweet potatoes.

How long to cook sweet potatoes
Instant Pot Sweet Potatoes cooking time will vary anywhere from 20-60 minutes, depending on the size of the sweet potato. We’ve put together a graphic below to show you how long you should cook a sweet potato in the Instant Pot. Keep in mind you will also need to account for the time it takes for the Instant Pot to get up to pressure and the 10 minutes of natural release time at the end.
Different size sweet potatoes and adjusting cook time
As mentioned above, you will need to adjust the cook time depending on the size of the sweet potato. Here is what we recommend:
- For a small sweet potato, about 2 inches wide, set the Instant Pot for 20 minutes.
- For a medium sweet potato, about 3 inches wide, set the Instant Pot for 30-35 minutes.
- For a large sweet potato, about 5 inches wide, set the Instant Pot for 55-60 minutes.
- For extremely large/giant sweet potatoes, we like to halve or quarter them for quicker cooking.
