Our Dietitians’ Summer Sipper
When we need some hydration and want something more than water, we’ve been loving the sweet-and-salty flavors that this simple drink provides. Jessie has been drinking it after a round of sweaty yard work while watching her kids splash in the backyard pool. Jess recently whipped one up after she finished a hard bike ride in the foothills of Boulder, Colorado. And Stacie appreciated the delicious boost of electrolytes after a long summer walk on the country roads that surround her home. We can’t wait for you to try it, too!
Recipe Highlights
- A low-calorie, low-sugar drink that rings in at less than 30 calories and only 5 grams of naturally occurring sugars (from watermelon) with no added sugars

What You Need
Here’s what you need to make this hydrating mocktail today:
- Seedless watermelon – you’ll need 3-4 cups of cubed watermelon (you could also use purchased watermelon juice, if you can find it)
- Sparkling water – we like an unflavored choice, such as San Pelligrino or Perrier
- LMNT electrolyte pack – use 1 packet of any flavor of LMNT (we like the watermelon flavor best for this mocktail). Get a free sample pack of LMNT with any order – see details at the bottom of this post.
- Lime – you’ll need 1 medium lime
- Optional garnishes: Fresh mint leaves, watermelon slice, lime slices
How To Make This Mocktail
This fresh mocktail comes together in just five minutes. Here’s how:
- Make the watermelon juice by blending the cubed watermelon pieces in a blender until they are liquified into a beautiful pink juice. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer to remove any larger chunks or debris.
- Divide the watermelon juice among four glasses over ice, then top off each glass with a splash of sparkling water and a squeeze of fresh lime juice.
- Stir one packet of LMNT electrolyte into the mocktails by dividing it among the four glasses. Use a spoon to stir until it’s dissolved.
- Garnish the glasses with sprigs of fresh mint, watermelon wedges, or lime wheels.

What Are Electrolytes?
Electrolytes are specific nutrient minerals that have a positive or negative charge after being dissolved in water or blood. They’re important for health and support your body’s ability to maintain homeostasis in many ways, from muscle function to your body’s pH levels.
These are the electrolytes your body needs and uses every day:
- Sodium — the most abundant electrolyte in your body, sodium helps cells absorb nutrients and maintain the right fluid balance
- Magnesium — this electrolyte helps turn nutrients into energy, especially to aid muscle contractions and nerve cells in the brain
- Potassium — this electrolyte is critical for proper heart function and works in tandem with sodium to keep a fluid balance in your body’s cells
- Calcium — in addition to building bones and teeth, this electrolyte helps control muscle function, supports nerve function, and helps manage your heart rhythm
- Chloride — the second most abundant electrolyte in your body, chloride plays a key role in fluid balance and helping your body maintain its natural pH balance
- Phosphate — this electrolyte is a key component of the molecules that make up your DNA. It helps your cells metabolize nutrients, and it transports chemicals and molecules outside of your cells
- Bicarbonate — the carbon dioxide that doesn’t get excreted from your body through your lungs gets recycled into bicarbonate, which your body uses to maintain blood pH levels
