As registered dietitians, we often get asked if AG1 (previously called Athletic Greens) is worth the hype it has received from influencers and self-proclaimed health experts. So we decided to put it to the test. We’ve been using AG1, on and off, for just over a year now. Personally, my husband and I keep it stashed in our refrigerator and take it about once or twice a week. Stacie and Jess’ husbands are devoted fans, and Ana and several of her family members drink it often.
If you’re wondering whether or not AG1 might be a good fit for you, read on to get our take on what is reportedly one of the best greens powders out there. We’ll walk you through how we tested this product, what we as dietitians think of the ingredient list, possible benefits, the cost, who should not use AG1, and possible alternatives (including other dietary supplements).

Our Verdict
Pros | Cons |
Convenient. On days when I know I haven’t had many veggies, I just mix it with cold water, shake, and drink. I was surprised at the pleasant, even slightly sweet, flavor with notes of chocolate, mint, pineapple, and cucumber. | Breastfeeding and pregnancy precautions. Due to adaptogens like ashwagandha and licorice root, it may not be appropriate for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals. |
Nutrient-dense. I appreciate that a scoop provides a comprehensive list of vitamins, minerals, plant compounds, and probiotics that may help fill gaps created by nutrient deficiencies, food preferences or intolerances (like picky eaters), or recent illness, travel, etc. | Interactions. AG1 may not be appropriate for those taking blood thinners such as Coumadin (warfarin), especially if you aren’t used to eating many vitamin-rich veggies and fruits. |
Long shelf life. I like that is doesn’t have to be refrigerated but can be kept in the fridge to maintain freshness. | Allergies. AG1 is free from most major allergens (gluten, dairy, eggs, and nuts), however it does contain soy. It also contains green tea extract and alfalfa, ingredient that some people are allergic or sensitive to. |
Portable. The travel stick packs make it easy for us to take AG1 on the road. | Cost. If you already eat a variety of foods, including plenty of vegetables, then the cost of AG1 won’t be worth it for you. |
Not a complete multivitamin. Does not contain vitamins D3, K2, or iron. However, AG1 does sell a tincture of D3+K2 that they recommend you take when drinking AG1. |
What Is AG1?
AG1, made by Athletic Greens, is one of the most talked about greens powder supplements out there. We know because so many of you have asked us if AG1 is worth it. Almost weekly in our inboxes and DMs on social media, someone was asking us what we thought of AG1 and what benefits it provides, so we decided to test it ourselves and write this review.
Each scoop of this greens powder has 75 vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients (plant compounds sourced from whole foods), probiotics, prebiotics, fiber, antioxidants, and adaptogens.
The purpose of these proprietary blends of superfoods, adaptogens, and essential nutrients is to support optimal health and well-being in those who don’t eat an optimal diet and who use it regularly.
One of the most popular claims made by the company and its devoted users is that daily use of AG1 supports:
- Brain health
- Immune health
- Increased energy production
- Gut health
- Hormone health
- Healthy aging
Here’s How We Reviewed It
When we first tried AG1, team of three dietitians and our social media team (Ana and Molly) were all provided a complimentary one-month supply of AG1 to try for ourselves.
Our goal was to consume one serving per day for 30 days and note any changes in how we felt. We paid the closest attention to changes in appearance of our skin, energy levels, immune system function, and digestion.
Here’s what we noted*
- Overall, we did not notice any improvements in the appearance of our skin.
- Ana, our social media coordinator, and Dean, Jessica’s husband, both reported that it seemed to give them more energy, especially in the afternoon lull. And also that it helped them with metabolism, stay regular in the bathroom.
- As a group, we are pretty healthy eaters and we don’t get sick very often, so it was hard to know exactly if drinking AG1 positively impacted our immune systems or hormone health. But we will say that we’ve had very few sick days this last year.
*We enjoyed our experience and think AG1 can be a beneficial addition to a healthy diet. Our results weren’t surprising, as we all eat balanced diets with many whole foods on a regular basis. You may have a different or even more dramatic experience, especially if you start using AG1 as part of a major dietary overhaul.
If you’re here and already know you’d like to try AG1, use this link to make your first purchase and get a free starter kit (including a refillable canister, shaker bottle, 5 travel packs, and free Vitamin D3+K2 dropper) when you purchase your first double subscription order (the best deal).
How We Use It
For the most helpful AG1 review, we tried to stick to exactly how Athletic Greens recommend the supplement be consumed. We added a single (12-gram) scoop of the green powder to 8 ounces of cold water in the provided shaker bottle (which fills up half of the water bottle that comes with the starter kit).
You could also add AG1 to a smoothie, juice, yogurt, oatmeal, or other soft or liquid food. You can find recipes for smoothies featuring AG1 here if you want to branch out!
According to the company, you should not mix this greens powder with:
- Anything containing caffeine (like coffee, tea, hot chocolate, or kombucha)
- Foods that contain excessive amounts of fiber (such as psyllium husk or another fiber supplement)
- Beverages that are hot or highly acidic
They warn that not following these guidelines may affect the integrity or efficacy of some of the ingredients or reduce your ability to absorb some of the ingredients.
We did, however, find that the amount of water added to make the powder most palatable varied from person to person depending on their tastes and preferences. I, for example, prefer to mix it into 16 ounces of water (the full AG1 water bottle), whereas Jess’ husband, Dean, and my husband, Chris, stick to the 8-ounce recommendation. This tracks, as they both tend to be rule followers 🙂
AG1 is meant to be consumed daily. Some of our team and their spouses found it easy to create a daily habit of drinking AG1 in the morning. Stacie gives it to her husband, Shane, who is known for having a pretty “picky eater” type of a diet. When he doesn’t eat many veggies, she’s happier knowing that he’s getting more nutrition from AG1.
I, for one, find it hard to take nutritional supplements every day. So my use of Athletic Greens is more like once or twice a week. I like that I can quickly take it on days where my nutrient intake has been low or days when I don’t plan ahead and realized that I accidentally haven’t eaten any veggies.
AG1 can be taken any time of the day. Ideally, you would drink it 10 minutes before a meal, mixed with 8-10 ounces of cold water, on an empty stomach to optimize the vitamin, mineral, and probiotic absorption.
If you are someone who forgets to take your vitamins once your day is underway, it may be best to drink AG1 first thing in the morning so you have one less thing to remember later on.
What Does It Taste Like?
Since everyone experiences taste differently, it’s hard to say for sure if you’ll love the taste. But I will say that most of us were pleasantly surprised by it. When my husband tried if for the first time, he even said, “Oh wow!” It’s really not like other greens powders that taste grassy.
Here are the tasting notes that we picked up on when trying Athletic Greens for ourselves:
- Overall, the taste is pretty pleasant with a slight sweetness. None of us noted any strong flavors of broccoli or kale, as you might expect in a greens powder.
- There are subtle hints of pineapple, cucumber, apple, and even a bit of chocolate and vanilla were noted by our team members when taste testing.
- Levels of perceived sweetness from the added stevia varied from ‘not very sweet’ to ‘pleasantly sweet’ with one team member finding it ‘way too sweet’. Keep in mind that it’s a supplement with 75 different ingredients, and it’s meant to be consumed rather quickly rather than be sipped all day.
Will you like the taste? That depends on what you like, but overall, we can say that the taste was not unpleasant or gross (yes, we’ve tasted some greens powders that we just couldn’t stomach). We didn’t need to hold our noses and chug it to get it down, but instead found it pretty easy to drink. The only way to find out if you like the taste is to try it for yourself.

What’s in It?
AG1 contains the usual vitamins and minerals you would expect to find in a high-quality multivitamin. But in addition to those, it also includes 4 proprietary blends that are made up of a variety of fruits, vegetables, plant extracts, functional mushrooms, probiotics, and adaptogenic ingredients, like ashwagandha.
Because these blends are proprietary, meaning the amounts of each ingredient are secret (like a special recipe), we can only report what is in each blend. We cannot say whether the amount of each ingredient is enough to support optimal health or have any meaningful effect.
Vitamins and Minerals

The FAQ page on the company’s website states that you can save 50% on shipping costs by having your order delivered every other month. To do so, you’ll need to sign up for a Double Subscription, then manually change the delivery date in your account so that you are skipping every other month.
This would save you up to $54 a year and help reduce your carbon footprint, but it also puts the burden on you to manage your subscription.

- Helps recovery thanks to superfoods, antioxidants, and adaptogens
- Aids digestion through the addition of enzymes that help improve the breakdown and absorption of nutrients from the foods you eat
- Promotes cognitive health and mental clarity via the addition of superfoods and adaptogens
Of these listed benefits, the members of our team who use AG1 have experienced boosted energy and more consistent digestion.
3 Benefits We’ve Gotten
While we can’t say that we all experienced every improvement on AG1’s list, after trying AG1 for nearly one year ourselves (though not every day), we came to a few conclusions.
1. It Helps fill the gaps when Our diets Are less than optimal.
Even as registered dietitians, we have times when our nutrition is less than optimal. Sometimes, that’s for a day or two. Sometimes, it’s longer. Often, it’s when we’re traveling or in stressful, busy times of our lives.
While the human body is incredibly resilient, some people like the idea of having a “safety net,” if you will, to ensure they’re getting adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals and AG1 can help fill those gaps.
For example, while Jessica is not a daily user of AG1, she keeps some on hand for those times when optimal intake of whole fruits and veggies isn’t going to happen. Think: during travel or after recovering from an illness.
Ana, our social media coordinator, and Dean, Jessica’s husband, are both healthy eaters on most days. Yet still, they choose to use AG1 and they report that it supports energy and metabolism.
Personally, my husband and I both tend to drink it once or twice a week. Usually on days when we’re running around with our heads cut off and realized we haven’t eaten a very well balanced diet that day.
Shane, Stacie’s husband, is probably the pickiest eater in our group of husbands. He takes AG1 almost daily, at Stacie’s request. He tends to use it as a “liquid multivitamin.”
2. It helps create healthy habits in other areas of Our lives.
We find that healthy habits tend to multiply. For example, when we spend time meal planning on weekends, then we find ourselves eating more healthfully throughout the week. When we stick to our daily movements (walking, Peloton rides), then we also find ourselves getting better and longer quality sleep.
We think the same is true of taking supplements that are beneficial to you.
With that said, starting our days off with AG1 sets the intention for following through with other healthy habits throughout the days. These might include daily movement or exercise, meditation, and creating and enjoying well-balanced meals and snacks that keep us feeling energized.
3. It’s compatible with Most special diets and uses high-quality ingredients.
We only recommend supplements that are made from high-quality ingredients, and AG1 fits that requirement for us. We also appreciate the fact that you can use it on any of these diets:
- Keto
- Low-carb
- Vegan
- Vegetarian
- Gluten-free
- Dairy-free
- Nut-free
- Egg-free
- Grain-free
Though AG1 is not certified organic or non-GMO Project certified, it does contain some organic ingredients. The company says it is free of GMOs, herbicides, pesticides, artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, and artificial sweeteners. Their product is also free of gluten, dairy, corn, egg, and peanuts, and it’s made without animal byproducts, lactose, sucrose, or dextrose.
We like that AG1 is NSF Certified for Sport, meaning it has undergone exhaustive testing to verify that it’s free of heavy metals, contaminants, and free of over 280 banned substances by major athletic organizations.
We trust that, since AG1 is made in TGA-registered, NSF Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) registered facilities, that what you see listed on the bottle is what’s inside the bottle.
Are There Drawbacks?
Two of our team members initially reported bloating as a side effect of taking AG1 daily. This, however, eventually subsided as their bodies adjusted to the new supplement regimen. Because AG1 contains fiber from the non-digestible fiber inulin, it’s not surprising that they experienced this temporary side effect.
Whether or not you’ll experience bloating or excess gas will depend on your body. The only way to know how you’ll react and the benefits you might experience from taking AG1 is to try it for yourself.
Remember, Athletic Greens does offer a 90-day money back guarantee. If you’re not completely satisfied, you can contact the company anytime within 90 days of your first order to initiate the return process.
If you are unsure whether or not AG1 is appropriate for you, we suggest you talk to your doctor or healthcare provider before trying it.
Who Should Not Use It?
AG1 is likely NOT the best choice for you if:
- You eat vegetables daily and at nearly all meals (then it’s not really necessary)
- You’re on a tight budget (AG1 is not cheap, so if you’re already spending money on healthful ingredients to make nutritious meals at home, then it’s not necessary to spend more money on a supplement)
- You already take a quality multivitamin and/or probiotic (then it’s not really necessary)
- You’re pregnant or breastfeeding (consult a doctor first, if you’re interested)
- You’re taking blood thinners, such as Coumadin/warfarin (there may be contraindications)
Some Cheaper Alternatives
If you’re not ready to try AG1 or have tried it and are looking for more budget-friendly alternatives, consider these greens powder supplements. Each one provides vitamins and minerals, fiber, plant compounds, and probiotics in varying amounts.
Build a Better Habit
If you find it hard to create a new habit like taking a daily supplement, try coupling the new habit with an existing habit to help you remember. For example, if the first thing you do each morning is make a cup of coffee, prepare and drink your AG1 while the coffee brews.
Supercharge your habit by making it ridiculously easy. Try filling the shaker with the powder and setting it directly in front of the coffee maker the evening before. Then, all you have to do is add water, shake, and drink each morning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not everyone testing the product experienced side effects, but two of the six of us found it caused minor bloating for a few days before we got used to it.
In some cases, people report side effects from AG1 including bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and other digestive distress.
Of those on our team who use it most consistently (Ana, Jessie, and three of our husbands), our personal reviews match those on the AG1 website where the average overall rating is 4.5 stars (out of 5).
Ana gives Athletic Greens a 4.5 star review. She likes the taste and says it mixes into water much better than other greens powders she has used. Jessica’s husband, Dean, gives it a 4.5 star review, as well. He likes the taste, his improved digestion, and how easy it is to take. The one prohibitive factor for him is the cost. Shane doesn’t love it or dislike it, but he drinks it because he knows it’s an easy way to get more daily vitamins and minerals. My husband, Chris, and I both enjoy drinking it.
On the Athletic Greens website, positive reviews cite ease of use, convenience, refreshing taste, better energy, improved digestion, and increased feelings of wellness.
Negative reviews most often cited the cost and displeasure with the taste and/or slightly grainy texture at the bottom of the bottle.
Honestly, that’s something only you can decide for yourself. As a team of six, our experiences ranged from:
– Three people who absolutely love it and plan to continue their daily habit,
– One person who didn’t love it and couldn’t quite make it a part of their daily habit,
– Two who thought it was a helpful tool that can be used as needed to supplement their diet from time to time.
The best way to know if AG1 is for you is to give it a try for 30 days. We will say that the cost is high, so if you eat vegetables daily or wouldn’t make AG1 part of a healthy habit, then it’s probably not the best choice for you.
AG1 is a more comprehensive supplement than many other greens powders, offering 75 vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds per serving. Other brands offered 50 or fewer active ingredients and some, like Organifi and Amazing Grass, are certified organic.
The most notable difference between AG1 and other greens is that AG1 is significantly more expensive and to get the best value, you do need to utilize the subscription option.
The double monthly subscription gives you the lowest per serving cost. But if you don’t need 60 servings per month, it’s on you to remember to modify your delivery dates so that you only get a shipment every other month.
AG1 is only available online from drinkAG1.com.
No, you should still eat your vegetables (your mom was not wrong about that!). But AG1 can help fill in the gaps that can happen if you don’t like or eat veggies for any reason.
For instance, you can use AG1 to supplement your vegetable intake when:
-You don’t like them
-You don’t really know how to cook vegetables
-You don’t have the time to buy and prep them
-Your nutrition needs are increased, such as after a prolonged illness when your healthy food intake has been suboptimal
AG1 works to help fill in dietary gaps that may mean you lack key nutrients, but it’s not going to replace whole foods in your diet or lead to massive changes in your health.
According to the available evidence and our own personal experiences, AG1 may help support overall wellness as part of a balanced diet.
We would have to say ‘yes’ to this — our philosophy is always “food first, supplements second” when it comes to nutrition.
However, we understand that not everyone can or wants to make a diet based on whole, real foods their priority. We also know plenty of adults who do not like vegetables. And for some, drinking AG1 does give them better energy or digestion so for them, it’s worth the extra cost.
The Bottom Line: Should You Try It?
If you could benefit from a veggie-packed punch in your daily routine and are looking for a quick and easy way to get it, give AG1 a try. You may find it’s the perfect new daily habit, or you might just keep it on hand for travel days or to help you fill in dietary gaps when your veggie intake is low or after being sick.
Like any supplement, it’s not going to completely revolutionize your health or transform your life. Our overall opinion is that we thought it generally tasted great, and as dietitians, we definitely approve of the ingredient list and nutrient profile.
We do, however, think that AG1 is expensive, so if you’re already spending your money on healthful ingredients and eating a healthful and well-rounded diet on most days, then the cost of taking AG1 is probably not worth it for you.
The only way to know for sure if you like it, tolerate it, and feel it’s worth the cost is to give it a try.
Athletic Greens offers a ‘try it once’ option in addition to a subscription. To kick the tires on AG1 for a month to figure out if it works for you, then that’s the way to go. If you love it, then you can save some money later by starting a subscription.

Tanya N. says
Thank you so much for writing this! I’ve been going back and forth on trying, hoping it was safe and not a waste of money. For years, I’ve love your content, recipes, and guidance! Thank you, ladies!
Jessie Shafer says
Hi Tanya, we’re so glad you found this helpful, and thank you for the very kind comment!
Cindy says
I have been using this product for 3 months and have been very satisfied. The 4th pouch I’m currently drinking is making me nauseous with stomach upsets that have kept me in the bathroom and disrupted my daily routine. Why is this happening?
Jessie Shafer says
Hi Cindy, that’s strange that it would affect you differently the 4th time around. Your stomach upset could be attributed to any number of other things, too, such as stress, other items in your diet, travel, other exposures, etc.
Daniel says
I was very excited to learn and hear of the product and others like it. Then I recalled, I am on a blood thinner, Eliquis, and I remembered that I read somewhere that it is not good to have things like Lion’s Mane mushroom etc with it or not advised. Although they did not say DON”T DO IT, I took at as that as I do not want to jeopardize my health even by chance. How dangerous is it for me to consider any of these Greens powders to add to my already mostly healthy diet?
Jessie Shafer says
Hi Daniel, that is a better question to direct to your healthcare provider who prescribed the blood thinner since they will have a better view at your full medical history. If you are already eating a mostly healthy diet that doesn’t have contraindications with your medication, then a greens powder is likely not necessary for you.
Jennifer says
Thanks so much for mentioning that it contains alfalfa – I’d never heard that before, and that is definitely something that would bother my allergies.
Janice says
My husband adds a scoop of protein powder to the mix. Is that ok?
Jessie Shafer says
Certainly! AG1 is not a protein powder (it contains just 2 grams of protein per scoop), so using it together with a protein powder can turn it into more of a healty protein-rich drink or even a small meal replacement.
